In basic mathematics, it is generally known that one plus one often results in two. But in Genesis 2:24, it was stated that a man and his wife shall become one. While this may not make sense in basic mathematics; it may make sense in English language by looking at the word, better-half.
Better-half generally refers to a person's wife or husband. Thus, if your wife is your better-half, and you are the better-half of your wife; then better-half plus better-half should give you better-one. Which should bring peace and development to your home; though this is not generally so.
Most time, when couple quarrel, we hear some of them say that they will show their partner their bad-side. And the other partner too will reply with the same words of bring out the bad side. And, as the years go on, they tend to build on these bad sides until the home is broken.
Every human being has a good side and a bad side; though depending on our perspective of good and bad. Although, we can’t say if the good side and the bad side of a person are equally divided in halves.
But, everyone often want to have the good side of the other person.
In marriage, we come together with someone that have different background, different norms, different upbringing, different lifestyle, different life perspectives, different food, different way of dressing, different way of communication, and so on. And, often times, these differences tend to make it difficult to have a better part of the other person; as they generally affect trust, behaviour, attitude, and so on. Thus, because of these differences between partners, one may be battling with the bad-half of a partner in the home, while the good-half is dormant.
But a careful work on closing the gaps on these differences between partners may help to get more of the good part of the partner, (that is, the better side, referred to here as the better-half of the person). This careful work is generally believe to be a conscious concerted effort to build love in the home; and it has been seen to have close out these differences to bring out the better half of a person.
While love is generally seen to be a difficult concept that is often misuse; practically, to have love in the home, each partner must make some of the efforts that are stated below.
i. Seek the betterment of your partner by ensuring that both partners have what it takes to stand alone; and also for both partners to work for the common good of the home. For example, as the man is upgrading himself to have a better place in the society, he should also make sure that the woman have the same right to upgrade herself to be relevant in the society. The home moto should be, ‘both should grow’; since love is not self-seeking and does not dishonor others.
ii. Seek to have better understanding of each other by taking into cognizance, the fact that your partner is from a different background; and thus, may have built up some behaviours over the years that may take time to change. Thus, both partners should keep it in mind always that love is not easily angered, love bears with each other, love always perseveres and forgive each other.
iii. Seek to always have better relationship; making sure that your partner does not miss his/her former family, friends and relations. Both should endeavor to check if the other is comfortable with the way the home is running. Make adjustment to provide comfort for your partner. Check daily on causes of disagreement and work on them; and always remember that love always protect, hope and trust. Thus, you must protect the interest of your partner in the home, hope for better relationship, and trust on the capability of both to build a good home.
iv. Seek a better guidance by seeking the face of God through joint study and joint obedience with love. Lead your partner to God and support your partner in God. And with God’s help, you will have your better-half in your home.
Paul wrote, ‘….I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name’, (Ephesians 3:14-15).
Kneel always to have your better half!
